Spray foam insulation is a type of insulation that is applied to your home or building by spraying the product to the structure. It is often referred to as “Open Cell” or “Closed Cell”. Spray foam insulation is extremely effective at its job and is widely used due its incredible performance when applied correctly. It can be applied in most areas such as walls, ceilings, under floors, crawl spaces and attics. Spray foam insulation really shines when it comes to regulating temperatures which also leads to reductions in heating and cooling bills. Another great thing about spray foam insulation is that it can be applied in new or existing buildings.

There are a few differences between Open and Closed Cell foam insulation. The more basic differences are the moisture permeability, the R-Value, and the rigidity of the foam after it sets. Basic functions can be summed up as Open Cell is basically for an air barrier and allows moisture to pass through, while Closed Cell blocks everything from passing through.

R-Value

Before we get into more about Open and Closed cell spray foam insulation you should know about R-Value. When looking for, or reading about insulation you will regularly come across the term R-value. The R-value of an insulation product is a measure of its ability to insulate or resist heat transfer. The higher the R-value the greater the level of insulation. Some insulation materials work better in summer than in winter and this will be reflected in the ratings, with separate summer and winter ratings specified. Such materials may be more suitable in areas that have hot summers and mild winters where excluding heat is more important than retaining warmth.

Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Open cell spray foam is a low-density non-structural insulation. Open cell R-Values are usually around 3.5 per inch. When it comes to open-cell spray foam insulation it is mainly used for air isolation. Open cell foam provides less R-Value than closed-cell foam but is relatively cheaper. It allows for some vapor to pass through it making it ideal for hot-humid climates. This allows for areas like under the roof where water vapor can accumulate to breathe and prevent wood rot. Open cell foam performs better at sound dampening as well due to its open cell structure.

Benefits:

  • Air barrier
  • Vapor permeable
  • Good for seasonal structure expansion
  • Greater sound dampening than closed cell

Typical Applications:

  • Unvented attics
  • Walls
  • Vented attic floors
  • Cathedral style ceilings
  • Crawl spaces

Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Closed cell spray foam insulation is one of the most insulating forms of insulation available. R-values for closed cell insulation are usually around 6.0 per inch. This type of insulation provides both vapor and air barriers unlike open cell foam. Closed cell spray foam insulation is highly durable and actually strengthens the structure of a building.

Benefits:

  • Air barrier
  • Vapor barrier
  • Rigid and adds structural reinforcement
  • Repels water
  • Interior and exterior use

Typical Applications:

  • Interior and exterior areas
  • Duct work
  • Attic floors
  • Interior and exterior walls
  • Crawl spaces
